Arequipa

Arequipa or "The White City", so named because of the predominance of its constructions with sillar stone, offers the tourist a great variety of architecture with temples, convents, monasteries and its famous convent of Santa Catalina which dates from 1580, as well as a great variety of large, old, stately houses.

Misti

The Colca Canyon, located in the province of Caylloma, is more than 100 km. long and its deepening starts some kilometers after Chivay, with its deepest point at 3400 meters. Its considered the deepest canyon in the world. The zone of Colca is ideally suited to the practice of adventure sports (kayaking, trekking, etc.).

In Arequipa you can find many mountains that are part of the mystical history of the Inkas. These mountains, or Apus, were protective entities of the populations that lived near them, and they received the name of huacas because, as the Peruvian historian Garcilazo wrote: "in the same way other things offered to the Sun were called huacas, things such as figures of men, birds or animals... any temple big or small, and the graves they had in their fields.

They called Huaca the large mountain range of the Sierra Nevada they gave the same name to the high mountains, the ones that were higher than the rest to all these things and many other similar they gave the name of huaca, not because they thought they were gods or because they whorshipped them but mainly because they were different from the common things..."

Momia Juanita (Spanish for "Mummy Juanita"), better known in English as "The Ice Maiden", is a 15th-century Inca mummy of a 12- to 14-year-old girl who died sometime between 1440 and 1450. She was discovered in the Ampato Mountain in Arequipa in 1995. Also known as the Lady of Ampato and The Frozen Lady, she gives us an insight into the ancient rituals performed by the Incas in their ceremonial places within the mountains or Apus.
